Close the Gap

Published on September 10, 2016 by Betsy Hanscom

“I asked my thirteen-year-old grandson to make a video to create awareness about the Eastern Trail and the opportunity to close a 1.6 mile gap in it. This is his take on it.
About ninety thousand people a year enjoy the Eastern Trail for commuting and recreation. The “gap” in it forces people onto roads with little room for pedestrians and cyclists — making it dangerous. The need for two bridges and leveling the ground has made the cost of completion an estimated $3.8 million – a lot for anyone to think about – especially a young teen. All but $600 thousand has been raised and small to large donations will help.
Once completed, the trail will go from Bug Light in South Portland to Saco, Maine without interruption. It’s a beautiful trail. Your help in the way of donations and spreading the words would be greatly appreciated by thousands.”

Close the Gap – Connecting South Portland to Scarborough on Maine’s Eastern Trail

Published on June 9, 2016 by Eastern Trail Alliance

The Eastern Trail is a vital multi-use trail of state-wide significance in Maine. The trail extends 65 miles from South Portland to Kittery, and travels by scenic woods, tidal marshes, and classic Maine villages. Since its creation sixteen years ago, the trail has provided millions of people with a recreational and transportation resource that connects them to the beautiful Maine landscape.

The construction of this critical trail segment, which includes two bridges will close this gap and provide 16 continuous off-road miles reaching from South Portland’s Bug Light to Downtown Saco. The cost to close this gap is $3.8 million dollars.
