Dear Friends of the Eastern Trail,
It is with excitement and gratitude that I write to you as the Eastern Trail Alliance’s new Interim Executive Director. I am humbled to step into this position during a unique and exciting time in our organization’s history.
The Eastern Trail did not happen by accident. It was born in the late 1990s from the audacious vision of John Andrews and a small circle of passionate friends who believed that a 65-mile greenway connecting Kittery to South Portland was not only possible — it was essential. From that first spark, this group of conservationists and activists built something extraordinary: a volunteer-powered nonprofit, a partnership spanning twelve municipalities, and miles of off-road trail that now hum with cyclists, hikers, runners, birders, and families. To everyone who has poured their time, expertise, and heart into this trail over nearly three decades — thank you. The ground beneath our feet is a testament to what you built.
The ETA is at a genuine crossroads — a moment that calls for both gratitude for the past and creativity and new inspiration for our next chapter. Our work to complete the original vision of the Eastern Trail as Southern Maine’s backbone greenway is within reach. The communities along our trail will have more opportunities to engage with it, whether commuting safely to work, exploring the natural world, or meeting new friends and neighbors.
As I begin my time as Interim Executive Director, I look forward to being a friend and partner to our stakeholders. Please reach out to me any time with questions, ideas, or suggestions about the trail— or just to say hi! I am eager to help chart the next chapter of this extraordinary trail, together.
Sincerely,
Eliza Alexander
Interim Executive Director
Eastern Trail Alliance
