Our Vision..........

The northern end of the Eastern Trail at Bug Light Park in South Portland Imagine walking - or biking - mostly through off-road woodland trails from Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Bug Light Park on Casco Bay in South Portland.  This is the vision of the Eastern Trail Alliance (ETA).

Direction signs along the Eastern TrailThe Eastern Trail is both a trail and a vision. The Eastern Trail, is an existing scenic on-road trail mostly following quiet country roads. Experienced bike riders and hikers can enjoy a beautiful 80+ mile journey from South Portland's Bug Light Park on Casco Bay to Kittery's Piscataqua River. Follow the signs or buy a copy of our new Pocket-sized Eastern Trail Guide to plan your journey.

ET, the vision, will be a moThe Eastern Trail at Scarborough Marshstly off-road Greenway, free from noise and air pollution, where Maine families and visitors of all skill levels will enjoy Maine's quiet natural
grassy surface part of the trail beauty. ET, the  vision, will follow the corridor of the nearly forgotten, historic Eastern Railroad, the first rail line connecting Portland with Boston. The vision is becoming reality. South Portland's Greenbelt, complete nearly from Casco Bay to the Scarborough town line, is part of the Eastern Trail. Scarborough Marsh will soon be crossed by a new 2.4 mile section of the off-road ET. The ET is also the Southern Maine section of the East Coast Greenway that will connect Calais, Maine with Key West, Florida.
