Eight bidders
for OOB to Thornton Academy in Saco By bid deadline eight
impressive proposals had been received by Eastern Trail
Management District (ETMD) for the design of the ET from
Cascade Road in OOB to Clark St., Saco at Thornton Academy.
This section will include a new bridge over Rt. 1. Plans call
was vendor selection by 6 March. Public meetings will
be help to solicit your thoughts. Contract award is
expected in early March.
HNTB wrapping up Preliminary
Design Biddeford to W. Kennebunk HNTB is nearly done with
the preliminary design of this 6.2-mile section from West
Cole Road, Biddeford, beside Southern Maine Medical Center
(SMMC) to Rt. 35 in Kennebunk. The vision now includes
parking areas at each end. Kennebunk elementary school
property adjacent to the ET has extensive parking lots we
hope to be able to use. At the northern end, SMMC staff is
working to allow its users access to its parking lots.
Imagine the opportunities for 10K metric (6.2 mile) races.
Several ETA volunteers including Treasurer Bob LaNigra
organize and run in them.
Maine
Lighthouse Ride (MLR) Update ETA has added a
much-requested metric century (62-mile) ride with 8
lighthouses. Again hosted by Southern Maine Community
College at Spring Point Light on Casco Bay, MLR includes, 25,
40, 62 and 100-mile marked routes with maps, signs and rest
stops. Riders will be offered hot showers, hot food and good
conversation following their ride with views of Casco Bay and
Portland Head Light. Free ride T-shirt for those who register
by August 28. Click here to sign
up!
MLR Volunteers needed to
drive SAG wagons to support riders with problems. Own a
pick-up truck? Can you patch a bike tire? Know a bit of first
aid? Know how to call 911? If yes to any of these questions,
please contact "Henry Beeuwkes" , SAG
wagon team leader. Volunteer ham radio operators will
ensure communications. The MLR Committee also needs a
MLR Traffic Coordinator. Duties helping find volunteers to
help riders cross significant intersections, mostly in South
Portland. Good job for your service club.
Spur Trail
planned to connect OOB ET to Saco's coming Cascade Falls Park
With support from Maine Department of Inland Fish & Wildlife,
the Town of Old Orchard Beach, the City of Saco, Saco Bay
Trails and Chamberlain Homes, a 1.3-mile route has been
found to connect the ET in OOB with the historic 60-foot
Cascade Falls, soon to become a new Saco City Park.
Next step is to find funding for this planned 4-foot wide
hiking trail.

19-Miles as One Big ET Project?
During ETMD brainstorming, support has been growing to define
the longest remaining unscheduled section of the old rail
corridor as one big project. From Rt. 35 in Kennebunk
to Rt. 91 in S. Berwick the corridor is pretty much wide open
with only a few challenges. Next step? Preliminary
design.

ETA's Biggest Challenge
Non-profits follow a natural life cycle from all-volunteer
to staff-managed. For nearly ten years, ETA has been able to
hire some
amazingly talented, dedicated part time staff. Carole Brush,
does an unbelievable job. ETA needs her full time; the
organization's
future requires
that it, like most other non-profits, grow to be able to
hire full time staff to manage the organization. Member
contributions and
fundraising events like Maine Lighthouse Ride determine the
future of ETA.
