JULY 2003 EASTERN TRAIL NEWS

ET Crossing Scarborough Marsh in 2003? NO
We ran out of lead-time for the ET to cross the marsh in 2003.  To protect consumers federal regulators are reluctant to allow gas pipelines taken out of service between Oct. 1 and May 1.  Bridge installation and moving the gas pipe require stopping gas flow for several weeks.  Bridge installation should begin on 1 May 2004. The ET should be open across the marsh by the start of summer 2004.

Final Vote on Municipal ET Support
Voting $5,000 each for ET support are: South Portland, Scarborough, Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Biddeford, Arundel, Kennebunk, Wells, South Berwick, Eliot and the Eastern Trail Alliance.  Kittery Council voted to appropriate $2,500, the same as the first two years.  Only N. Berwick failed to vote financial support for the ET.  Thank you for contacting your councilors and for attending your town meetings.  In this year of painful deficits, this is an amazing demonstration of ET support.

MDOT Bike-Ped Bond Status
The Legislature adjourned without passing a transportation bond.  When they adjourned $1.1 million had been restored for bike-pedestrian projects .  Please write & call your legislators asking that they support the transportation bond including Governor Baldacci's recommended $2 million of bike pedestrian projects.  To find your legislators' phone numbers and mailing addresses: http://janus.state.me.us/house/townlist.htm  For more information, click here.

Eastern Trail Bridge over the Pike
The ET Management District received a letter from Maine Turnpike Executive Director Paul Violette describing MTA's commitment to donate an Eastern Trail bridge over the Pike in Kennebunk.  What a wonderful organization with great leadership!

Grants Received this month:

Kennebunk Savings Bank Institution generously pledged to donate $1,500 to reprint the ETA Brochure and support membership growth.
Biddeford Savings Bank became an ET corporate sponsor with a generous $500 contribution for ETA operations.
Route 109 Improvements in Wells
At 7:00 p.m. on Monday July 21 in Wells HS Auditorium MDOT will present preliminary plans for the proposed highway improvements in Wells, Route 109.  The section under study connects both the on-road and off-road ET's to Amtrak.  Today there are no paved shoulders.  The off-road ET underpass should not be filled if the road is widened.

Membership Growth
Bob LaNigra, ETA Secretary,  Boston Marathon runner & Director of the Great Pumpkin Road Race wrote letters to 200 runners inviting them to join the ETA! Thanks, Bob.  ETA needs YOU.  Do you care if we build the ET?  Those who care are ETA members.  See the ETA Web site for on-line application.
