ETA Logo8 - Lighthouse Ride

Saturday, September 17, 2005

The Eastern Trail Alliance hosted the second annual Eastern Trail-a-thon 8-Lighthouse Bike Ride on September 17, 2005. This year, three bicycling options were offered – a 12-mile family ride on the South Portland Greenbelt, a 35-mile intermediate loop through Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth, and a 75-mile ride that took riders around Biddeford Pool. This ride is getting established as a major cycling event in Southern Maine, and thus we will build it up even more in 2006!

The 12-mile family ride followed the 6-mile South Portland Greenbelt. This mostly off-road, paved path winds through waterfront neighborhoods in South Portland, then turns inland through lovely wooded sections of South Portland before reaching Wainwright Farms Recreational Field, where snacks and facilities are available. The riders returned to Bug Light via the Greenbelt. Estimated ride time (slow pace): 2 ˝ hrs. (Sorry, only two lighthouses are visible on this trip.)

The 35-mile intermediate ride left Bug Light Park with an Eastern Trail guide leading the tour, but riders rode at their own pace. This tour includes the South Portland Greenbelt as well as a spur to the recently completed 3-mile section of the Eastern Trail across the beautiful Scarborough Marsh, the largest salt marsh in Maine. For those of you who haven’t seen the new trail yet, it is not to be missed! From there, the ride continued along the spectacular coastline of Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, and South Portland, passing by three state parks, five gorgeous beaches, and two museums. Eight historic lighthouses are visible from the route. This 35-mile ride was led at a moderate pace, and usually takes take 4 to 5 hours with one rest stops provided. There is so much to see on this ride, you may want to take all day to finish it!

The 75-mile ride includes all of the beautiful scenery of the other rides, as well as a jaunt through Old Orchard Beach and Saco to Biddeford Pool, home to the University of New England and an active fishing village. This ride was not led by Eastern Trail guides. As with the 35-mile ride, maps were provided.

T-shirts: Once again we offered ET T-shirts for riders (a new design, a great four-color 8-Lighthouse T-shirt.
