Events on the Eastern Trail - 2018

Happy people enjoying the Eastern Trail!

There are many fun events that take place on a regular basis on the Eastern Trail! You can also find additional events on our online ETA Calendar.

Events on this page are organized with Trailwide events first, then specific sections:  So. Portland-Scarborough-OOB-Saco, Biddeford-Arundel-Kennebunk, and Eliot, South Berwick, Berwick, Kittery, North Berwick, Wells.  At times we will also list other interesting Maine, New England region and national trail events here.

Upcoming Trailwide Events:

  • Maine Lighthouse Ride — Saturday, September 7, 2019. This is our premier event for the year, and we will once again cap the ride at 1200 registered riders! We sell out each year, so pleas register early. If you did not get to register and want to participate, please consider volunteering to help support the ride. More information here.

Upcoming So. Portland-Scarborough-OOB-Saco Section Events:

  • Saturday Sept. 29 - Loop & Lunch Ride. This will be the third of the season, starting 9:30 am, at Wainwright Field in S. Portland—which is off of Highland Ave. The ride will be co-hosted by two Bob’s---Bob LaNigra and Bob Hamblen.
    • Meet at 9:00-9:10 am at Wainwright Field-125 Gary L Maietta Way, South Portland, ME 04106. Ride will start at 9:30 am.
    • Ride will be approx. 32-34 miles. Course will be a loop, from Wainwright Field, along Rt. 77 in Scarborough, to Shore Rd. in Cape Elizabeth, out to Bug Light and back to the finish along the Eastern Trail. There will be an unsupported, shorted route, of 20-21 miles, if anyone is interested.
    • Lunch will be at the Easy Day Rest. in SoPo —725 Broadway- which is adjacent to the Eastern Trail, and approx. 4 miles from the finish.
    • Helmets are required.

  • Wednesday, October 24 - ET Full Moon Walk, 7 - 8:30 pm, Scarborough - ETA Parking lot - Pine Point Road - Scarborough Marsh (map). Join our Eastern Trail Director, Carole Brush, to watch the moon rise over the marsh, look for animals, learn about the trail, enjoy conversation and walk in the light of the full moon.   • Saturday Oct. 20 - October Lunch and Loop Ride - Wear your wildest color or tweed! 9 am - 2 pm (route to be announced). This may be a wear your wildest colors or tweed ride. Look for future announcements about this ride. Requirements: 1) Wear a helmet, 2) Be able to average a speed of 13 to 15 mph, 3) Make sure you bring sunscreen, money for lunch and a bottle of water or two. Rides are capped at 25 to 30 riders. Upcoming Biddeford-Arundel-Kennebunk Section Events:

  • Sat., Sept. 29 Great Maine Outdoor Weekend on the Eastern Trail Twilight Walk, 6 - 7:30 pm, Biddeford - Southern Maine Health Care back parking lot, 1 Medical Center Drive (map). Our twilight walk will start at the trail head at the rear of the Southern Maine Health Care Hospital parking lot. The trail is constructed on the old Eastern Railroad bed and it is relatively flat and easy going. For newcomers to the ET we will give a brief history of the development of the trail and exciting plans to extend it southward as well as information about the Eastern Trail Alliance. Depending on the trail conditions and weather we will hike in the direction of the Arundel town line at a leisurely pace with stops to point out local features of the area. Participants are encouraged to engage all their senses to experience the sounds, smells as well as seeing the woods and fields at dusk and feeling the trail underfoot . The route will include a pond that has seen a great deal of beaver activity, with evidence visible from the trail. We will return in about 90 minutes. No flashlights or pets please.
  • Wed., Oct. 24 ET Full Moon Walk, 7 - 9 pm, Biddeford - Southern Maine Health Care back parking lot, 1 Medical Center Drive (map). Join our Eastern Trail Trustee, Joe Yuhas look for animals, learn about the trail, enjoy conversation and walk in the light of the full moon. Upcoming Eliot, South Berwick, Berwick, North Berwick, Wells Section Events:

    • No events scheduled at this time.

Here are some exciting group trail events planned for 2018 and 2019:

      • Maine Lighthouse Ride — Our Biggest Event takes place September 7, 2019. This is our premier event for the year, and once again will be capped at 1200 registered riders! Each year we sell out early, so register now! Three great ride options:
        • Century  (100-mile) 7:30 am (See all 9 lighthouses.)
        • 62-mile   (metric century) 8:15 am (8 lighthouses visible)
        • 40-mile   9:00 am (8 lighthouses visible)
      • Lunch and Loop Rides. To acquaint participants with the beauty of the Eastern Trail and increase two-wheeled camaraderie, the Eastern Trail Alliance will sponsor from three to five bike rides. To allow riders to enjoy Maine’s seasonal changes, ride organizer Russ Lamer will lead them from Spring through Fall. More information here.
      • Happy people enjoying the Eastern Trail!ET Moonlight treks are scheduled throughout the year, often every month -— walking in the summer, snowshoeing and skiing as possible in the winter.

      • Consider hosting an event on the trail that takes advantage of its fine resources. An example of such an event is the Snowy Egret Run/Walk for the Marsh, held on the Trail each Memorial Day weekend. Such events need to fill out a Event Request Application.
